Trezor — Get Started (trezor.io/start)

Official setup guide: download Trezor Suite, install firmware, create wallet, back up recovery seed, and secure your device.

Quick Overview

Use trezor.io/start for the official downloads and step-by-step setup. This guide walks you through the recommended, secure process to initialize your Trezor device and protect your keys.

Step-by-step Setup

  1. Inspect the package. Check the box and device for tampering. If packaging looks tampered with, contact vendor or Trezor support before proceeding.
  2. Open trezor.io/start in your browser and follow the official prompts to download Trezor Suite for your OS (Windows / macOS / Linux / Mobile).
  3. Connect the device. Use the supplied USB cable to connect the Trezor to your computer.
  4. Install or update firmware. Trezor Suite will detect the device and prompt to install/verify firmware. Allow the update — firmware ensures device security.
  5. Create a new wallet. Follow the Suite prompts. The Trezor will generate a recovery seed (mnemonic phrase) on-device — write it down on paper, do not store digitally.
  6. Set a PIN. Choose a secure PIN on the device; this protects against physical theft.
  7. (Optional) Enable passphrase. For extra security, enable a passphrase feature (this creates a hidden wallet). Use carefully — forgetting the passphrase can mean permanent loss.
  8. Verify addresses. When sending/receiving, always verify the address on the physical device screen before approving transactions.
Estimated time: ~10–20 minutes for a full secure setup (firmware + seed + PIN).

Recovery Seed — Do This Correctly

The recovery seed (24 words for most Trezor models) is the single most important item. Treat it like cash: if someone else gets it, they can steal your funds.

12 example seed words — write these on paper, store in a sealed place.
(Your device will generate the real seed on-screen; never type it into a phone or cloud.)

  • Write the seed on the supplied recovery card or on paper; use multiple physical copies in separate secure locations if desired.
  • Never photograph or store the seed digitally (email, photos, cloud storage, or text files).
  • Do not share the seed with anyone — Trezor support will never ask for it.

Advanced & Optional Security

  • Passphrase: Acts as a 25th secret word—great for hidden wallets but if you forget it you lose access.
  • Multisig: Use multisig setups for larger holdings (requires more advanced configuration and multiple devices/keys).
  • Firmware verification: You can verify firmware signatures and check releases from Trezor's official repo if you want additional assurance.
